[[Next Page|3]]Hello!
This is a little historical document that, well...documents the very accurate history behind a certain city.
And this city is called...
<img src="city images/3city.jpg" alt="page2" />
Shou Mian City
[[Beast...Sleep...City??|4]]
<img src="city images/4approaching.jpg" alt="page4" />
Legend has it, in a small village, a ferocious beast would appear on the first day of the new year.
[[It rises from the ocean.|5]]<img src="city images/5name.jpg" alt="page5" />
This beast would would make a "Nian" sound, so people called it the Nian Beast.
By the way, "Nian" is also the chinese character for 'year'.
[[NIAN!|6]]<img src="city images/6veggies.jpg" alt="page6" />
The Nian Beast never harmed people, but would destroy the fields, which troubled the farmers.
[[I like veggies too.|7]]<img src="city images/7mountain.jpg" alt="page7" />
Usually, the farmers would hide in the mountains during the first day of new year's.
[[They didn't want to get hurt.|8]]<img src="city images/8plan.jpg" alt="page8" />
But this time, the farmers gathers in the fields instead.
It seems that they have a plan.
[[It's time to fight back.|9]]<img src="city images/9.jpg" alt="page9" />
It turns out, the Nian Beast has three fears.
[[Three weapons.|10]]<img src="city images/10red.jpg" alt="page10" />
Red
Bright lights
Loud noises
[[Lanterns, Drums, Firecrakers.|11]]Well, that's how the evil Nian Beast was defeated. It ran away and didn't bother the farmers for the rest of the year.
Everyone lived happily every after. For now.
The End.
----
Years go by, a city was build on top of that farming village.
It became tradition to celebrate new year's with the bright, loud and red.
New Year, New "Nian".
The celebrations lasted for as long as the Beast remained.
[[...But what if it couldn't leave?|12]]<img src="city images/11fear.jpg" alt="page11" />
Surrounded by its enemies, the Beast has nowhere to run.
<span class="link">[[I can't leave|13]]</span>
<img src="city images/12still.jpg" alt="page12" />
[[Thus the beast slumbers,|14]]<img src="city images/13dreams.jpg" alt="page13" />
[[The End|15]]Wow! You made it! Thanks for reading all the way through.
Who said historical texts have to be boring?
It's important to understand the history of this city.
Particularly if you plan to live here for the forseeable future.
Right, Ein?
<span class="link">[[...|16]]</span><span class="nian"> I'm not scared anymore.
I'm getting used to it now.
"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger," right?
But I guess in my case it's "What doesn't kill you makes you lazier."
I'm actually pretty comfortable here. Sleeping the days away.
Can't even remember what my life was like before I settled down.
...
I don't want to leave.
I'd rather be bathed in red than go outside and find out there isn't a place for me anymore.
I hope you enjoy your stay here in my beloved city.

[[Afterword]]You've reached the afterword section!
My name is wenxuan.
It was pretty fun making this little zine (at least it was planned to be a zine).
I recently downloaded KidPix4 Deluxe and I wanted a project I could use it for. It's a silly little art program that made 'making art' feel less like a chore.
I had no game plan going into each piece. Just a sentence.
Lots of explosives and "OH NO"s went into the making of these drawings.
For the Nian Shou lore, I took bits and pieces I liked from its Baidu article and stitched it together.
The purpose of this zine (can I still call it that?) is to establish the location for all my other self-indulgent art projects to take place in.
Hopefully I can make more Twine stuff in the future!
Bye!
